Hi all,
I’m Sara Fonfría, the potter behind this page.
I make wheel thrown pottery that is functional.
All my work is inconsistent, this meaning the core is always there, unchanged, but the final pieces differ. Production pottery is not for me and I feel a total rejection towards making hundreds of pieces, all as similar as possible, in the fastest possible of ways and in a machine like manner. I have never been able to ignore the human in me while making pottery, with all that this involves.
While at the wheel, I always use random weights of clay and let it flow, allowing internal and external influences to translate into my work. I am also a very slow maker and, since I am not a full time potter, my work is always limited. However, as previously mentioned, at the core of all this there is an unchanged vision in which I want to make pottery that possesses a great attention the detail and finishing, that is calm, that feels right in our hands, with intricacies and elements of surprise and with great refinement, but without loosing functionality.
I am also very much fascinated by the world of glazes. I always apply at least two different glazes to each piece, since I like to see the way they react together. I enjoy how glazing in this way hardly ever produces the same outcome and it is subject to outside elements such as where the piece is positioned in the kiln, how thick or thin each application is, whereas it’s sunny or rainy outside and how much energy I give into the process. I love how there are so many elements in pottery making that are almost out of our control and that, sometimes, it’s by pure chance what we get in the end. For me, glazing is crucial in defining the individuality of each piece, which is something that I fully respect.
As previously mentioned, I don’t want to make two pieces the same, in the same manner that there are not two people the same, two clouds the same, two trees the same... I want each piece to stand alone in front of this world and have something unique to say.
